In this article, we will learn how to create a new project in ArcGIS Pro. If you are new to ArcGIS Pro, I hope this article is for you. We are trying to help you migrate to ArcGIS Pro. ArcGIS Pro is the successor of the old and bulky ArcMap. ArcMap is a great GIS software, but it is so heavy and not suitable for today’s requirement.
ArcGIS Pro uses term “Project” to store its data (geodatabase), settings, and layout. The project will be stored in a local or remote folder. By default, ArcGIS Pro will create a new geodatabase inside the Project folder. We can change this if we want to use the different default geodatabase.
Steps to Create a New Project in ArcGIS Pro
First, open the program. You should see something like this. If this is your first project, you might not see anything under Recent Project.

Click Map to create a new Map or Project. Give a name for the new project and specify the location.

Click OK and then the new ArcGIS project should be ready for use.

Now let’s familiarize ourselves with the ArcGIS Pro interface. Compared to the older ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro has a better and more modern look. We can find all the menus at the top. By default, on the left side, we have a Contents panel where we can see all the opened layers on the map. We can also add more tools to the panel on the right. For example, the Geoprocessing Tools is not available on the right by default. We can turn this on by going to View | Geoprocessing.
The Geoprocessing Tools is a set of tools that are very important for us as a GIS and Data Analyst. There are many geoprocessing tools in ArcGIS Pro but they might not be all available. It depends on what kind of license that you have. We will discuss further about geoprocessing tool in ArcGIS Pro in the upcoming articles.
